On the 26th of May 2022, representatives of BelMAPE participated at the Meeting of the Committee on Public Health of the Republican Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs on the topic « Alcohol and public health: the concept of harm reduction».

During the meeting, there had been considered the issues of negative impact of alcohol consumption for public health, patterns of alcohol consumption, international practice to reduce alcohol consumption, peculiarities of alcohol consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As part of the implementation of Subprogram 3: “Preventing and overcoming drunkenness and alcoholism, mental health care” of the State Program “Health of the people and demographic security of Belarus” for 2021–2025, there had been considered proposals of implementing the concept of harm reduction in relation to the consumption of alcoholic beverages with the possibility of switching consumer preferences towards low-alcohol beverages.

Reports were made by representatives of the Narcological Service, as well as associate professor of the Department of General Medical Practice of BelMAPE Natalia Protko, head of the Department of Endocrinology Larisa Danilova.

The discussion of the aspects of a balanced alcohol policy based on the concept of harm reduction (risk reduction) was attended by the chairman of Committee on Public Health of the Republican Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs Alexander Shvets, dean of the Faculty of Public Health and Healthcare Irina Tikhonenko, dean of the Therapeutic Faculty Elena Vorobyeva, representatives of business of the Republic of Belarus.
