Aleksandr Vorobei

Aleksandr Vorobei was born in Zhlobin district of Gomel region. In 1971 he finished a secondary school № 1 in the town of Krupki of Minsk region; in 1977 he graduated from Minsk Medical Institute, the Faculty of General Medicine. In 1978 he did his internship on surgery at Minsk Regional Clinical Hospital.

From 1978 to 1983 Aleksandr Vorobei worked as a head of the Surgery Unit in a local clinic of the urban village Khalopyenichy of Krupki district, Minsk region. Since 1983 he had been working at Proctology Unit of Minsk Regional Clinical Hospital; from 1985 to 2002 Aleksandr Vorobei worked as a head of Proctology Unit at the same hospital. In 1990 he defended his Candidate’s thesis titled «Invagination techniques of anastomosing in large bowel surgery». In 2000 he defended Doctoral thesis titled «Surgical and medical-and-social rehabilitation of patients with entero- and colostomy».

In 1995 he started to work as an assistant and then as an associate professor at the Department of Surgery and Topographic Anatomy of Belarusian Institute for Advanced Medical Training. In 2002 he was promoted to the position of head of the Department of Surgery of Belarusian Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education. In 2003 he got the title of a professor.

Aleksandr Vorobei is an active member of the following associations: International Association of University Colon and Rectal Surgeons; World Association of Surgeons, Gastroenterologists and Oncologists; European Medical Laser Association; Association of Surgeons and Hepatologists of Russia and CIS countries; a member of the Board of Belarusian Association of Surgeons.

Aleksandr Vorobei is an active member of the Expert Council of the Higher Personnel Review Board on Surgery of the Republic of Belarus (since 2008). He is also a member of the Personnel Review Board on Surgery of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus, Expert Commission on Oncology of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus, Science and Technology Council of BelMAPE. Since 2008 he has been a member of the General Assembly of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Belarus. Aleksandr Vorobei also works at editorial boards of the journals «Healthcare», «Surgery news», «Surgery. Eastern Europe». Since 1996 he has been a chief visiting proctologist of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus and expert in medical devices.

Since 1986 Aleksandr Vorobei has organized 14 republican and international scientific and practical conferences and 11 master-classes on surgery, has edited and prepared for publication 10 collections of scientific works, has published 12 monographs and practical guides, 109 journal articles, has more than 300 scientific works.

Since 1996 Aleksandr Vorobei has given more than 60 reports at international surgery conferences abroad, he has 150 scientific publications abroad (39 English publications), he is a permanent member of the Advisory Committee of the Annual Congresses of Surgeons-Hepatologists of CIS countries, an expert of the annual international conferences «Russian School of Colorectal Surgery».

Aleksandr Vorobei is a member of editorial boards of the leading surgery journals: «Langenbeck's archives of Surgery» (Germany) and «Videosurgery» (Poland). Since 2011 Aleksandr Vorobei has been chosen to be an honorary doctorate of Lvov National Medical University, since 2010 - coordinator from Belarus and co-chairman of annual Balto-Belarusian conferences on colorectal surgery. Aleksandr Vorobei was awarded an honorary diploma from the Association of Surgeons-Hepatologists of CIS countries (2011).  He is a member of three international and Russian professional associations.

Aleksandr Vorobei has been awarded the following Certificates of Appreciation: from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus (2005; 2006; 2007), the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus (2010); Higher Attestation Commission of the Republic of Belarus (2011); the reward «For excellence in healthcare of the Republic of Belarus» (2004), the medal «For excellent work» (2013). Three times he was awarded a scholarship of the President of the Republic of Belarus: for the contribution to surgery field (2000); for the contribution to medical science (2010); for the contribution to education (2013г.).

Aleksandr Vorobei is an organizer and board chairman of Belarusian Pancreatic Club (2011).

He is an active corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Belarus.
