Valery Pilotovich was born in a family of an employee in 1945 in the town of Cherven of Minsk region. In 1969, he graduated from Minsk Medical Institute with a specialty in general medicine. From 1969 to 1971, he worked as a physician at Urology Unit of the 4th Minsk Clinical Hospital. From 1971 to 1974, Valery Pilotovich worked as a junior research assistant at the Central Scientific and Research Laboratory of Minsk Medical Institute. In 1974, he defended his Candidate’s thesis and started to work as a senior research assistant at Kidney Transplantation Laboratory of Minsk State Medical Institute. In 1986, he defended his Doctoral thesis. From 1986 to 1994, Valery Pilotovich worked as a senior, and then as the main scientific researcher at the Unit of Transplantation and Symptomatic Arterial Hypertensions of the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Cardiology. From 1994 to 2000, Valery Pilotovich was in charge of the Laboratory of Operative Nephrology at the Central Scientific and Practical Laboratory of BelMAPE, and worked as a professor at the Department of Urology and Nephrology of BelMAPE.
His scientific and practical work has been mainly devoted to the study of the methods of diagnostics and treatment of patients with renal diseases, complicated by chronic renal insufficiency, including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and kidney transplantation. Together with the staff of the Laboratory and clinical units of the 4th Clinical Hospital of Minsk, Valery Pilotovich participated in the creation of the Republican Center for Nephrology and Kidney Transplantation, which he headed from 1998 to 2004. From 1995 to 2004, Valery Pilotovich worked as a chief visiting nephrologist and chief specialist in dialysis and kidney transplantation of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus. From 2006 to 2008, he headed Minsk Clinical Nephrology Center based at the 1st Clinical Hospital of Minsk.
He has the highest qualification category in urology (1992) and nephrology (1998). In 2001, Valery Pilotovich was chosen as an academician of the Belarusian Engineering Academy. He has been a member of the International Society of Nephrologists since 1999 and has been an active member of the European Association of Dialysis and Transplantation since 1998. From 2005 to 2008, he was in charge of the Scientific and Technical Board of BelMAPE, a vice chairman, and then – a chairman of the Expert Board of the Highest Attestation Committee of Belarus. Now Valery Pilotovich is a member of the Council for the Defence of Doctoral thesis of BelMAPE.
