Yuri Shanko was born in Brest region. In 1982, after the graduation from Minsk Medical Institute, he did internship in surgery. From 1983 to 1986, Yuri Shanko had been working as a neurosurgeon at the 9th City Clinical Hospital; from 1986 to 1998 — as a neurosurgeon at the 5th City Clinical Hospital of Minsk. From 1998 to 2000, he had been working as a leading researcher of the Neurosurgery Unit of Belarusian Scientific and Research Institute for Neurology, Neurosurgery and Physiotherapy.
In 2000, there had been organized a special course on neurosurgery at BelMAPE, where Yuri Shanko started to work as an associate professor. From 2007 to 2010, he was in charge of the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery of BelMAPE. In December, 2010, he was appointed to the post of a deputy director of the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Neurology and Neurosurgery.
In 1993, he defended Candidate’s thesis. In 2006, he successfully defended Doctoral thesis. In 2004, he got the academic title of associate professor; in 2010, he got the academic title of professor.
His scientific interests include topical problems of neurosurgery of the base of the skull, neurooncology, acute focal lesions of the brain. For the first time in Belarus, he developed the principles of diagnostics and surgery of lumbar stenosis, performed a radical removal of a craniofacial tumor, proposed modified approaches to the base of the skull, developed principles for managing the early postoperative period in neurooncological patients, and proposed new technologies for assisted neuroendoscopy in surgery of head tumors. brain, endoscopic surgery of pituitary tumors.
The results of scientific researches are reflected in almost 300 scientific works, among which there are 6 books, including: "Diagnostics and surgical treatment of subtentorial peri-stem meningiomas" (2005), "A short course in neurology" (2008), "Craniocerebral trauma "(2008)," Diagnostics and surgical treatment of traumatic injuries of peripheral nerves "(2008)," Practical guide to neurotraumatology "(2010). He has 9 patents, about 20 educational and methodical publications.
He is a Laureate of the Prize of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus in the field of medical sciences for 2008.
Her was awarded with the badge "Excellence in Healthcare of the Republic of Belarus" (2001), the medal "65 years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945" (2010).
